NowSecure, which pioneered the mobile security industry and helps the world’s largest institutions protect their data on mobile devices, has announced that its NowSecure Mobile App has been selected by Silent Circle for inclusion in its app store launching today. Silent Store is available to all Blackphone users who will gain access to the app store via an update to its custom-designed operating system, PrivatOS. Blackphone is a carrier independent smartphone giving individuals and organizations the ability to make and receive secure phone calls, exchange secure texts, transfer and store files, and video chat without compromising user privacy on the device. As the first app store developed with a focus on privacy, the Silent Store offers apps that have been reviewed by Silent Circle for reasonable security-minded coding and implementation practices. Each app’s requested permissions are listed explicitly, so that users download with confidence while exploring new apps and services. A special Blackphone version of NowSecure Mobile App has been selected to be among the first offerings in the Silent Store. “Quite simply, Blackphone users running NowSecure Mobile App will experience an unprecedented level of security for their data,” explained NowSecure founder and CEO, Andrew Hoog. “Silent Store requirements restrict it to only apps approved by their team. NowSecure Mobile App goes a step farther and provides users visibility into where those apps are sending data. For instance, if an app is transmitting information to a server in Asia without the user’s knowledge, NowSecure Mobile will reveal that.” “Silent Circle and NowSecure have similar philosophies,” stated Daniel Ford, D.Sc., Chief Security Officer of Silent Circle. “We each believe in a zero-compromise approach to mobile security. For this reason, NowSecure was a perfect fit for the Silent Store, and we’re pleased to offer it to our users.”
More about NowSecure: The Mobile App
While malware and computer viruses are the primary threats on PCs, leaky and insecure apps are the true risks to personal data on mobile devices. These apps transmit information in risky manners — e.g. without encryption or to overseas servers which allows data to be intercepted by unwanted parties. The harsh consequences can include identity theft, financial theft and loss of privacy. To protect against this risk, NowSecure Mobile (previously called viaProtect) was designed unlike other mobile security offerings that simply scan for known malicious code on the device. Instead, NowSecure Mobile is a comprehensive security platform for Android and Apple devices which identifies vulnerabilities before they become a problem. The NowSecure Threat Intelligence Platform identifies vulnerabilities through forensics, security testing, malware analysis, endpoint protection and mobile intel data, and then utilizes statistical analysis and risk indicators to detect suspicious events or behavior. NowSecure Mobile uses that analysis to inform users of vulnerabilities on their device and their apps. Any consumer can use NowSecure Mobile for free. In addition, enterprises with BYOD policies can deploy NowSecure Mobile in order to deliver collaborative mobile security for the organization, employees and customers. It provides key security features such as aggregate and individual risk scores, alerts and policy enforcement, while simultaneously educating employees about mobile security issues and easy to follow steps to secure devices – all in real-time. NowSecure Mobile supports a customizable dashboard to organize all mobile devices including aggregate security data, reporting and alerts. NowSecure Mobile has been named by PC Magazine as one of The 100 Best Android Apps of 2015 and received a PC Magazine Editor’s Choice award. It also was named an “App of the Week” by Macgasm, which wrote “This is a big step in seeing what apps are doing with your data.” Tom’s Guide reported that NowSecure Mobile is a “powerful and useful tool that could benefit every smartphone user concerned about his or her privacy and security.”
